Howze it going? August 2014

Post by mardler »

Hello everyone. Another busy month: in among, sailing, golf, gardening and other summertime pursuits we managed to add 1,200 lives to our database this month bringing our total to a shade over 88,800. We're beginning to get excited at the prospect of reaching six figures! Hope everyone is either enjoying the summer, or in the case of our Southern Hemisphere cousins, looking forward to it!

John Howes, 100 not out
We have another centenarian among us, John Howes, of Gorleston in Norfolk, England. You can see his story, as reported in the local newspaper, here: http://www.edp24.co.uk/mobile/news/we_a ... _1_3738376
John is a fascinating man, who has seen a lot of life, not the least being a prisoner of war in the Far East in the Second World War. His story is well-worth reading.

Now a puzzle: who is John?!
John wasn't in our database, because we hadn't noticed him before, though he will be after our next update! He was born after the 1911 census and has a mother whose maiden name apparently was Turner and yet there is no obvious Howes/Turner marriage that we can see. Does anyone know this family or can anyone figure more out? I'll be in the Norfolk Record Office over the next few days and will attempt to find out more.

Another significant milestone
John and Mary Howes Coos Bay, Oregon, USA have just celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary. See more here:

These folks aren't in our database yet, either! So we have similar questions to the above, if you're up for it

Contributing to the Bulletin Board
Just a reminder that if you ever want to contribute to this board, you will need to register additionally to the main site. Although the pages looks similar to the rest of the site, they are actually two different pieces of software, stitched together.

Finally, we just want to acknowledge the help of Colonel Robert Howes, the Howes Family Association genealogist who has provided us with a good deal of information about the Howze families in North America. Thank you, Bob. The book will be on its way back to you soon!
