From the burnt records at Ancestry.com, it appears that he was discharged in 1912 and later re-enlisted

Medal citation from the London Gazette of 25 Nov 1916
      33896 By. S. /M. F. Howes, E.F.A.
For conspicuous gallantry in action. When the enemy started shelling the wagon lines, he removed the horses with great skill, setting a splendid example to his men. Later, on several occasions he carried messages to the gun positions under heavy fire.

Medal citation from the London Gazette of 3 Sep 1918
      33896 B.S.M. F. Howes, D.C.M. R.F.A. (Silvertown, E.).
For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. This warrant officer was at the battery position when it was heavily shelled and there 'were twenty-two casualties. He walked from gun to gun, steadying the men, who were much shaken, and keeping them at their posts. Shortly afterwards the forward wagon-lines were shelled, causing more casualties. He ran over at once and superintended the evacuation of the remaining horses, though salvoes of shells were bursting.

Also, we are indebted to Tim Howes in Australia for sending us this passage from the book by Huntly Gordon entitled "The unreturning army" (J.M. Dent and Sons Ltd., 1967). Huntly Gordon was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Royal Field Artillery in June 1917 and posted to the 112th Brigade. On page 97 he wrote:

"Battery Sergeant Major Howes is a real character. A true Cockney, ex-Welter-weight Champion of the Indian Army; a boxer's broken mose, a jutting
chin; and a way of standing poised and leaning slightly forward, as if about to jab his left into his opponents face. There is a hidden menace in his husky voice, and the men have a healthy respect for him, so he really gets them moving. Me he tolerates, showing little deferrence to an inexperienced officer less than half his age, which is reasonable enough. Quick-witted and cheerful, utterly unconquerable. In fact the ideal
Brigade Sergeant Major." Praise indeed, though he wasn't a cockney, even though he married a girl from there.
