    • It would appear that Sarah and William's marriage may have broken up before 1871 when she is living in the house of a Joshua Mellers, as his housekeeper, with three young children. We have aincluded all the children we can find here but note that there is doubt over their parentage. Our doubts were strengthened by George's marriage record which names a Josiah Howis as his father.

      William appears to have moved to the same village in Yorkshire as his son, Frank, by 1881, and to have changed his name to Hall, perhaps to escape detection! There is no doubt that the 1881 census record is him. Everything ties up, with the sole exception of his surname.
