Born in London, 1st July 1870, son of Walter Frederick Howes of Lowestoft. Private, 13th February, 1889; Corpl., 23rd May, 1903 Sergt., 22nd February, 1897 ; Cr-Sergt., 1st April, 1898 ; Sergt.-Major, 22nd April 1905 ; Qr.-Mr. and hon, Lieut., 19th March, 1913 ; hon. Capt., 1st July, 1918 ; Capt., 8th August, 1918 ; retired, 13th July, 1925. Served in the Tirah Campaign of 1897-98, and was present at the capture of the Sampagha and Arhanga Passes ; the reconnaissance of the Saran Sar and action of the 9th November, 1897. Operations against the Khani Khel Chamkania, and in the Bazar Valley, 25th to 30th December, 1897. Affair at Shinkamar, 29th January, 1898 ( medal and 2 clasps). In possession of the Medal for the Delhi Coronation Durbar, the Coronation medal of 1911 and the medal for long service and good conduct. During the war of 1914-18 served in India, and in the operations against the Afghans in 1919 (medal and clasp, M.B.E., and general service Medal).
