- from Karin Serfontein
I am from South Africa and have interest in the Howes. I have received the following from a lady who did a search for me regarding John Howes. Would love to know if this helped you. I am interested in Mary Ann Austin, daughter of John Austin and Elizabeth Howe married at Mattishall. It is my privilege to let you have the following:
Have been searching through the records again for the origins of ELIZABETH HOW(E). It is somewhat confusing due to different spellings of the name in local Registers - HOW, HOWE, HOWES, HOWS, HOWSE, HOUSE and even HOWK.
There was an ELIZABETH HOWES baptised at Mattishall on 15th July 1791, the daughter of JOHN HOWES, a weaver, and his second wife ELIZABETH BROWN. She seemed to be a possibility as the bride of JOHN AUSTIN, and would, of course, rule out the widow ELIZABETH AUSTEN who married JAMES KEY if she was the person who died in 1828 aged 61 years. (I have not found an ELIZABETH HOW(E) baptised c1767).
The first wife of JOHN HOWES was MARY WODEHOUSE who died in 1782 (buried 10th March) leaving her husband with two small sons, CHARLES and WILLIAM. Late in 1782, JOHN HOWES married the said ELIZABETH BROWN, a widow of the parish of St Margaret, Norwich. Banns were called in Mattishall in October and no doubt the marriage took place at St Margaret's. In addition to daughter, ELIZABETH, this couple had JOHN baptised 15th September 1783, SARAH baptised 3rd November 1786 and RICHARD baptised 8th March 1789.
It is known that the son JOHN HOWES enlisted in the 76th Regiment of Foot c1799, he had a wife named ELIZABETH and a son JOHN born c1809. He wrote a letter to his wife on 12th July 1809 whilst on board the ship "William and John" at Harwich (no indication of where the ship was bound) and addressed to her at Red Cow Yard, St Giles, Norwich. At that time, his father was said to be living in Mattishall but there are no burials recorded here for the parents JOHN and ELIZABETH HOWES. The son RICHARD may have had a wife named ELLEANOR and sons RICHARD born c1816 and JAMES born c1818. They were living in East Dereham in 1820.
I cannot say for certain that the ELIZABETH KEY buried in 1828 was the wife of JAMES KEY although the records do not show up any other likely candidate. Another problem is that the only eligible JAMES KEY was baptised in 1796 which would make him about 27 years of age in 1823. He had a sister SARAH - you will see that SARAH KEY was one of the witnesses at the marriage. Would he have married a widow aged 56 years, I wonder? Think I may have created a 'red herring'!!
In my own experience, I know of a woman who had a child when she was 61 years old and that was in the 1930s or 1940s. Her youngest child at that time was 19 years old! Looking at an example from the 18th/19th centuries, there was a WILLIAM HOWE, born at Kimberley c1765, and his wife MARY nee LONG. They were married at Welborne in 1788 (no children baptised there) but a few years later turn up in the Mattishall records. Between 1795 and 1811, they had thrirteen children baptised but only two of them survived infancy. The wife MARY died in 1815 aged 64 years, only four years after the last child was baptised. This and other tragedies unfolded as I worked on the Registers and I was moved to tears for those people of long ago. Neither of the two surviving sons married - one lived more than 50 years and the other (a tailor by trade) was 74 when he died. Their father was still alive when the 1851 Census was taken.
WILLIAM HOWE (mentioned above) and his son HENRY were bricklayers. In 1839, when he was 36 years old, HENRY HOWE was recorded as receiving five shillings and one and a half pence during a time of sickness. That was quite a sizeable sum in the 19th century but there is no indication of how long it had to last. His father was an inmate of the House of Industry for 14 days during the December Quarter of 1844, and in 1845 (aged recorded as 80 years), 1846 and 1847 he was in receipt of Out Relief due to sickness.
Sir Edward Parry, the Polar explorer, rented a house in Mattishall for a few months in 1835 when he was appointed as an Assistant Commissioner for the New Poor Law (he was on half pay from the Navy at that time). From his own letters and family correspondence it is obvious that they considered Mattishall to be a very poor and unhealthy place, full of peasants with large families, and not enough work to go round. The picture is very different today.
Enjoy a wonderful day,

From the web (Ancestry.com): worth checking, but unlikely she didn't marry.
