      LATE MR A HOWSE OF CALNE
      South African War Veteran
      The funeral of Mr Arthur Howse, of St Elmo, New Road, Calne, took place at the Nonconformist Cemetery on Tuesday, the Rev. H. J. Gliddon conducting the service. Mr Howse, who was 68 years of age, died on the previous Saturday, 4 leaving a widow, two sons, nine daug ters, and 14 grandchildren. At the age of 18 years he joined the 1st Grenadier Guards, serving in the Egyptian and South African campaigns as a colour-sergeant and for 12 years altogether. He was chosen as one of the leading coffin bearers to the late Queen Victoria, and his five medals with five bars were placed in the coffin with him as his last wish. He was a member of the Silver Street Methodist Church, being a local preacher for 45 years and superintendent of the Sunday School for 20 years. For 25 years he was employed by C. & T. Harris (Calne) Ltd. as a representative, retiring only twelve months ago.

      The immediate mourners were Mrs Howse (widow), Messrs, F. Howse and J. Howse (sons), Mrs. L. Carpenter, Mrs. H. J. Gibbs, Mrs. W. Quigley, Mrs. R. Drewett, Mrs. L. Deverill, Mrs. H. Hiscox, Mrs. F. Turner, Mrs. A. MacGregor (daughters), Mrs F. Howse amd Mrs. J. Howse (daughters-in-law). Messrs. L.
      Carpenter, H. J. Gibbs, W, Quigley, R., Drewett, and H. Carpenter (sons-in-law). Members of the family unable to be resent were: Mrs. H. Carpenter (daughter). Chief P. O. Hiscox, R.N., Pte. Deverell, R.A.S.C., P.O. Turner, R.A.F., and Pte, MacGregor, R.A.S.C. (sons-in-law).

      Amongst others present were: Miss Hedley, the Rev. H, Castle, the Rev. A. Glen Smith, the Rev. N. McCandlish, the Rev. W. Fisher, and Mr. H. Thomas. There were also representatives from the various churches in the district, and Mr. S. C. Bingham represented Sir John Bodinnar and C. & T. Harris (Calne) Ltd.
