- Disputed will
- transcribed from Northampton Daily Echo 11 Dec 1924
The hearding was resumed in the Probate Court today, of the dispute between the widow and Mrs Skelton, the housekeeper, concerning the wills of the late Mr William Howes, general dealer, of Clapham Park, The widow, Rose Kate Howes, who is the defendant in the above action, today gave evidence.
Asked if she forged the name William Howes Bridger to the will she propounded, witness replied, "Certainly not". She said her marriage with testator was very unhappy. In 1911 witness received a sentence of three weeks for receiving stolen property and had also paid £20 as a fine for buying a stolen dog.
She left her husband about 19 years ago, and had lived with a man named Belcher for some years, but not since the time she became friendly with her husband before his death.
Her husband told her he was not really living with Mrs Skelton. she was his housekeeper. He used to call Mrs Skelton "the old hen" and often said she was "on the juice" and taking snuff.
One day her husband came to her and said: "Rose, I am going to give you 11 1/2d out of every shilling." Witness then spoke to her husband and the witnesses signing the will of October 1923 and handing it to her saying, "There you are, Rose. I have proved to you what sort of a man I am. I have left you 11 1/2d out of every shilling."
Witness then described how, after missing the will she found it in her kennel coat after the bath had been tipped over her by a dog.

CLAPHAM WILL DISPUTE - Judgment for the widow
IN the Probate Court today, Mr Justice Hotridge gave judgement in the will suit concerning the estate of Mr William Howes, general dealer, of Clapham Park, who left about £2,000.
The widow, Mrs Rose Kate Howes, was defendant in that action and set up a will of 1923, which plaintiff, Mrs Alice Elizabeth Skelton, who became testator's housekeeper, alleged was a forgery and propounded a will of 1917 under which she benefited.
His Lordship said he was satisfied from expert evidence that the signature of the testator in the will set up by the widow was genuine. His Lordship also found that this will had been properly executed and pronounced in favour of it accordingly.
