Report from "The Wodonga and Towong Sentinel" Friday Dec 14 1888
SUICIDE NEAR WODONGA.
A painful sensation was caused in Wodonga on Monday, when it became known that an elderely woman named Ann House, seventy-eight years of age, and a resident in the district of over thirty-six years' standing, had committed suicide. A magisterial enquiry was held the same afternoon by Mr H. Harkin, J.P., when the following evidence was taken:-
Jane Sinnett, a married woman, daughter of deceased, deposed that she resided at House Creek. The deceased, whose health was good for a woman of her years, had come from Wodonga to live with her, and had received every attention in the house.
She complained, however, lately that her son Samuel had been drinking very heavily.
A few days ago, when witness took her breakfast to her, she said, "Never mind now; let me die, and no person will be any the wiser." Deceased was then in her bed.
She never expressed to witness any intention of committing suicide. At half-past nine o'clock on Monday morning, when witness brought deceased her breakfast as usual, she had her bedroom door fastened inside, and witness could not got in, but at
last she forced open the door. Found deceased sitting on the floor, her back resting against the bed. Her chest, neck, and hands were all covered with blood. She was breathing. Felt alarmed, and sent for
some neighbors. Mrs Bonsema was one of
the first who came.
Mary Anne Bonsema gave evidence to the effect that she had found deceased in the position indicated by the previous witness. She had also seen the razor produced in the room, which was covered with blood.
Assisted in putting her on the bed, and remained with her till she died.
Dr Mackenzie deposed that at about half past one p.m. he saw the deceased. She was then alive. Found a lacerated wound in her throat about 3 inches in length, and gaping widely. The windpipe was completely severed. There was a rugged wound on the windpipe, which was cut downwards.
The wounds had evidently been self-inflicted, and had been caused by a razor. None of the principal blood vessels had been injured, but some of the smaller ones had been opened. Her breathing was oppressive - a result due to the blood getting into the windpipe and entering the lungs.
As a consequence, deceased was unable to speak, although she was perfectly conscious up till within ten minutes of death.
Stopped the bleeding as much as possible, but had no hope of recovery from the first. Remained with her nearly two hours, when she died, in witness' presence. Was of opinion that deceased committed suicide whilst under a temporary derangement of
the mind.
Senior-constable Nee also gave evidence,
which, however, was merely of a formal
nature.
A verdict was recorded in accordance
with the medical testimony. [5]
