June 2011 - Howes that?

Post by mardler »

Happy July, folks, and an especially happy 4th to our American readers.

First the bad news: one of our two volunteers for organizing photographs has been promoted and has had to step down. The other is finishing several papers needing to be written toward her degree. If anyone has the time and inclination, please do step forward. We now have a complete instruction guide and you can pick your own pace.

Frederick Samuel Howes
Tim Howe from Australia knew that his grandfather had perished in the trenches of the Somme during the First World War. Understandably, his family had little knowledge of the man and Tim wanted to find out more. Through diligent research he tracked down a book which contained a description of him by his commanding officer, which is reproduced in the Notes field at the bottom of this page:

Such comments bring an ancestor to life and do so much more to help us appreciate our forebears than the plain facts which fill our database. Have you found anything similar on one of your House, Howes, Howse or Hows ancestors? Would you share it with us?

Now the rest
- we've added another 2,800 people into the database.
- we've "geo-coded" 600 more locations. All places with 12 or more citations are now geo-coded which means that the maps underneath most individuals' records will be more relevant. Not so good is that another 18,000 places still need coding!
- we've added over 100 more certificates to our now extensive collection. Do you have any more you can share with us?
- we have added another page to the website thanks to our correspondent Deirdre from Australia who sent us a list of convicts transported to Tasmania. You can find it here:

Do you have an ancestor listed there? If so, please let me know at paul@howesfamilies.com

Detail
We've added several hundred records on each of
- House families in Somerset
- Howes families across Norfolk, now having finished work on the 1911 census
- Howes families in North-East Suffolk
- a large House family from Leicestershire who moved to Kent and then to Virginia and spread throughout the US, including one branch that set up an American school of Agriculture in Bulgaria
- a Howes family from Middlesex who ended up in Canada via the garrison town of Clonmel in Ireland. We traced the patriarch's military papers and were able to clear up a few questions about his heritage, which only raised more questions - you know the story!

As usual, a huge vote of thanks to all those who have shared their information with us. As a well-known British supermarket chain says, "Every little helps". We can't do it without your help.
THANK YOU
