Putting our Howes in order - March 2019 - again late

Post by mardler »

3rd of April and no monthly email for March yet! Apologies. I’ve had a pretty hectic social calendar the past few weeks, not the least important of which was the annual conference of the Guild of One-Name Studies last weekend. Quite a lot to report, actually. Buckle your seatbelts! Here goes.

RootsTech – looking backward and forward
I didn’t have space to mention last month that I spotted that there were two other people named Howes attending RootsTech in Salt Lake City and registered with the special App. I attempted to contact them both and one responded. I spent a lovely lunch talking with a young lady who gave me lots of information on her family. Thank you, Marissa.

While in Salt Lake City, I was also interviewed by Devon Noel Lee of Family History Fanatics. We talked about One-Name Studies in general and some of my experiences. If you would like to see me in action, check it out at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-j_thCQ ... e=youtu.be

Also, please do note that there are no fewer than 44 videos of general and specific topics available for view on the RootsTech website at https://www.rootstech.org/category/2019 ... h-sessions . I attended the one given by Myko Clelland, which was superb. If you have British research interests, it’s a must watch. The general sessions are good for emotional stories of family discovery, or in the case of Saroo Brierley, re-discovery! Given the names involved, I have no doubt that there are other gems among the other 40 or so.

As I said before, I am also an Ambassador for the same conference in London on October 24-26. I will have a ticket to give away to a reader of this newsletter and am thinking ahead about how best to do it. For Salt Lake City, I just drew the name at random from a “hat”, in part because it’s a big country and we don’t have too many people who can easily get there. For London, we have way more correspondents in the UK and it’s a lot easier for most people to get there. So I’m wondering how best to allocate the ticket. Do you have any ideas? If so, please do reply to my email: paul@howesfamilies.com.

Howes in the news
For our readers interested in the House name, I should say that I would love to show more news for you too but a daily web search for the House name is practically pointless until we have the technology to focus on the surname rather than the word.
- Kent Howes from Bend, Oregon is taking it easy for the next few months. See here for why!
https://www.bendbulletin.com/localstate ... lder-howes – Ouch!
- You either like these or you don’t. So I won’t mention him again, but Lewis Howes continues his weekly video podcasts, this month featuring SharkTank’s Barbara Corcoran and diver Greg Louganis, among others.
- Tony Howes of Norfolk in England is a wildlife photographer. See some of his work here:

- In Schenectady, New York state, Benjamin Howes, an actor, was in good form as Willie Wonka in a touring production of Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Does anyone know who he is?

- Is it really 50 years since Swindon Town beat the Arsenal at Wembley? Amazing. Here’s an interesting side note to the game. I wonder how many other men would have left their bride during their honeymoon? Obviously it didn't do their marriage any harm! Congratulations to Mr & Mrs Howes on their golden wedding.

Bigamy project
I subscribe to a British news service called Lost Cousins. Every month they send a newsletter about recent developments. Last month there was a section about a project being run by a British university professor on the topic of bigamy. She was asking if people would write in with examples from their own families. She would then treat such submissions as confidential.
I know of at least eight examples of bigamy in our study, where all of the people involved have died, including Joseph Thomas Leslie Howes, who married no fewer than seven times! So I wrote in to her, giving her URL links to each of the cases. Thanking me, she asked if she could quote our study in her report. Would I mind? Definitely would not mind – that was my hope! So I’ll let you know if and when I spot the results.

Monthly progress
In a busy month socially, we added only 600 people, again, finishing close to 144,300 people.
I had a few puzzles lined up for you to sink your teeth into, but realized late that I haven’t put the certificates online which help with the detail. So they will have to wait.
