Putting our Howse in order - July 2019

Post by mardler »

Hello everyone. The newsletter is a tad early this month because I’ve just started 15 consecutive days of regattas on my beloved Norfolk Broads! In case you haven’t heard it before, I will say that “In most parts of the world, people muck around in boats, but on the Norfolk Broads, we boat around in muck!”

RootsTech giveaway
Folks, you have just two weeks left to request a ticket in the lottery for a free 3-day pass to RootsTech. All you have to do is write to me at paul@howesfamilies.com AND either offer some information to add to our file or remind me that you have shared information with us in the past. Winning a free 3-day pass does not mean that you are committed to coming all three days! Having been to six RootsTechs in Salt Lake City, I can guarantee that you will have a stimulating time and learn a lot. See https://www.rootstech.org/london for more details about the show.

Bumper month
Remember that last month, we had added almost 5,000 people? This month we beat that and added over 5,000 more. Not only were we working hard anyway, but we added about another 3,500 people from the voter lists from Michigan and Ohio into our database and finished with over 155,500 people in our file. As noted last month, this was a spin-off from the One-Name Study into the Ruby surname, which I am leading for the Guild of One-Name Studies. We just published a blog post on how we did it and if you are interested, you can see it here: http://rubyons.blogspot.com/2019/07/the ... nline.html .

Given that we have added lots of living people, we now have over 40,000 living folks hidden by our confidentiality guarantee. We passed a few milestones too: we now have over 35,000 people named Howes, over 25,000 people named House, over 7,000 people named Howse, over 1,250 people named Howze and over 700 names Hows. Certainly, we have the largest collection of information on any of these names outside the main commercial data providers.

We’ve also started collecting information on the Houze name too and have over 200 of them, the 26th most popular surname in our database. See: https://howesfamilies.com/surnames.php for a list of the top 50 names in our master file.

Howes AND House families from Kings Cliffe, Northamptonshire
I received an interesting note from correspondent Steve Howes during the month about the village of Kings Cliffe in Northamptonshire. He said:
"My wife and I were out for a country walk the other week which took us through the lovely little village of Kings Cliffe near Peterborough.
https://goo.gl/maps/yLQmEYzFq97BNBDh8 (A google street view along West Street will give you and idea how pretty the place is)

"As we walked down the historic main street we noticed some little blue stickers in virtually all of the house windows ... they were about 4" round and displayed the name and occupation of the occupant just after the end of WW1 (1919 if I recall correctly). I thought that it was a lovely idea because as you read them as you walked down the street you got transported to a different era and got a really good feel of who lived there at that
time.

"One of the stickers jumped out to me as it was of a "Emily HOWES - A lady living of independent means"

"I thought afterwards that this was an excellent idea and that clearly Kings Cliffe must have a very active local history group......I subsequently did some googling and came across the Kings Cliffe Heritage website: http://www.kingscliffeheritage.org/archive.php

"If you do a search, there are a number of references to HOWES and HOUSE families with links to various documents, artefacts, wills, land ownership
records etc. For example there is a reference to a John HOUSE... a Ginger Beer manufacturer.. " See picture reproduced here.

As it happens, I visited the village myself earlier in the year while on my way to a conference. I only had time to take pictures of Howes graves in the churchyard and not enough to walk the beautiful village street to learn more, as Steve did. Now, John House's record is here: https://howesfamilies.com/getperson.php ... ee=Onename but I am struggling to figure out who Emily Howes was. There doesn't seem to be anyone of that name in the village in 1911 or 1939. So who was she? Anyone know?

Oh, and in case anyone is interested and hasn't seen it on our site already, here is a description of the Kings Cliffe Howes family and their impact on the local village: https://howesfamilies.com/histories/kingsclff.php.

Howes/etc in the news
An element of speed to two of our news items this month:
- Alex Howes, the professional cyclist, is the new US National Road Racing champion. See:
https://www.velonews.com/2019/06/news/h ... les_495503 and
https://www.velonews.com/2019/07/news/h ... win_495510
- Logan Howes from Norfolk, the young British karting champion, age 7, is moving up to the big leagues, racing against 13 year olds! His dad talks about how tough it is to support his son's racing career. I do hope he will find more sponsorship. See:
https://www.edp24.co.uk/news/logan-howe ... -1-6172802
- (technically not a House, but his mother is) Ricky Gervais is coming back to our screens next year with season 2 of After Life: http://igvofficial.com/ricky-gervais-af ... eries-two/

No puzzles this month. I've written enough! All the best
Paul
