Hi everyone. I do this every year! i forget to wish our Canadian correspondents a happy Thanksgiving in advance of October and the same to our Americans in November. Apologies.
I've been fortunate enough to spend the holidays with my younger son and his family in Massachusetts. Turkey, cranberry sauce, apple pie, sweet potato pie, pumpkin pie . . . Sleep induced by too much food. Quality time spent with grandchild. Enjoyable football games on TV for days! Lovely, though I'm missing the relatively warm Floridian weather.
So, before I forget, a very happy Christmas and Hannukah to everyone celebrating them. I also want to say, "Thank you," to everyone who has written in with updates to our database and special thanks to our regular volunteers, Ian and Mike. Without them, amassing all this data in 16 years just would not have been possible. If you have some time to spare and would like to help, let us know.
UK Journalist of the Year
Congratulations to Scarlet Howes who won this award for breaking stories featuring the BBC newsreader, Huw Edwards and 'Strictly Come Dancing", a popular dance program known in the USA as "Dancing with the Stars." Scarlet works for The Sun, which paper featured her success in the following article: https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/31764621/ ... list-year/
Does anyone know who this lady is? I cannot place her into her family context.
Yet another author!
Last month we featured Dr Hetty Howes. This month it's the turn of Emily Howes from Suffolk in England who has written an historical novel about the daughters of Thomas Gainsborough, the portrait painter. There's a very interesting and readable interview with Emily in Suffolk Magazine this month, which I thought would interest our readers. So here you go: https://www.greatbritishlife.co.uk/maga ... daughters/
Albert Howes, RIP
I learned today of the passing of Albert James Howes, sr of Massachusetts. Al was very encouraging to us when we first made contact with him as a representative of the Howes Family Association (descendants of Thomas Howes & Mary Burr) in the early days of this study. For a while we hosted the HFA's website on our site when they had problems with their own ISP. I spoke with Al several times and swapped emails with him on many occasions. Never was he anything but positive. I had known of his ill=health for some years but it's never pleasant to learn of someone's demise. RIP, sir, and thank you for your support.
Our work this month
We continue to monitor obituaries through our daily news feed. As a result, we've managed this month to find two new lines of descendants of Epenetus Howes 1794 of New York who had not previously been documented by Col. Bob Howes in his monumental work. One line of descendants hails from Ohio and the other from the border area between Indiana and Kentucky. It is nice to be able to extend Bob's work, though it's not that remarkable that we can, since there is so much more information easily accessible to our fingertips that was not to him. That said, I doubt that we will ever find all the Howes progeny of Thomas and Mary.
We've added 440 people this month to finish just shy of 216,900 people in our file. It's a small number of people added but I have completed another 13 years of our marriage project and I'm hopeful of being able to finish by year end. There are only 11 years left. However there are other things going on in my life that will require me to travel over to the UK for a few days next week. So we will see, but I'm definitely on the downslope now!
Thanks for your support, folks. It means a lot.
Paul
