Notes |
- Boston Globe article Oct 1, 1901, reads:
SALEM VETERAN SERVED IN US NAVY DURING CIVIL WAR
Salem, Sept 30: James Howes aged 60 of 7 Pond St died this forenoon. He was born in St Helena in 1854.
Capt. Charles Endicott of this city was homeward bound to Boston in his ship, Josiah Quincy, from Calcutta. He was one hand short and so put in at St Helena in order to have a full complement of men when he should reach Boston. He applied to US Consult Carroll for a man and that official sent young Howes, who was then about 15 aboard as a sailor, and he came to Boston in the ship. From that time the young man made this country his gome and continued to follow the sea.
In the civil was he served in the US navy. He was a member of post 24, GAR. He was greatly esteemed by a large circle of acquaintances.

HowesFamilies note: we suspect he was picked up on St Helena in 1854.
