George and Sophia HOWES lived at the top of Howes Hill, West Somerton as it was known then, on the road to Martham, leading up from Somerton School.
George Howes Sr. was a Joiner and Wheelwright before he farmed. He also ran the original Post Office and the Public House, "The Lion" in West Somerton.
The Electoral Roll for Great Yarmouth in 1850 states that George Howes of West Somerton had a Freehold House in Row 51, Smith's Alley, Great Yarmouth which gave him the right to vote in Great Yarmouth.
George Howes (Sr.) started the Post Office in West Somerton. George's son, Samuel Howes, was a Post Messenger (1864). Benjamin, another son, was the Mail Cart Driver and letters arrived from Yarmouth to Somerton at that time via Hemsby.
Kelly's Directory 1901 states that Elijah Simmons is listed for West Somerton Post Office and Charles Pitchers was in the Lion Public House. (Elijah Simmons was the father of "cousin" Alf.)
