Notes |
- Re undated occupation, see photo
From Elaine Howes: "JJ, by the way, gave rise to strong feelings among those who knew him. He owned a large store somewhere near the center of Norwich and offered mortuary services, sold tombstones, and was a licensed plumber. He also owned a lime works. As his eldest son, JHN Howes was expected to take over, but apparently he didn't like school and kept getting asked to leave. The story goes that he was given a small sum of money and put on a boat to Canada where he was expected to grow up.
If you believe the Canadian version.... He made his way to the midwest and established himself as a carpenter. He married a highly religious woman [her
father was Salvation Army]. They returned to England as father was rumoured to be dying. After a time, and a couple of more children - JHN fell out
again with his father and returned to Canada with family in tow. All 3 of the boys returned to participate in WW2, joining different divisions of the British military. My father-in-law used this time to catch up and lived for a time with his family in Norwich.
If you believe the English version.... JHN gambled away all his money on the boat over & had to be taken in by the Salvation Army where he met his wife.
Either way, most of what JJ had to leave when he finally kicked off went to a daughter who had never married and the only one who stuck around to take care of him."
