- Obit from the DeRuyter Gleaner
Judson W Howes, the youngest of the six children of the late LeRoy and Mary Jane Rider Howes, was born in what was long known as the Taylor House on Lincklaen Street, DeRuyter, July 12, 1863 and died at his home on Utica Street, Jan 17, 1914.
Soon after his schooling was completed, Mr Howes entered the Gleaner office as an apprentice, quickly becoming a swift and accurate compositor. Sept 20, 1885 he married Miss Frankie Hollenbeck of this village and in the spring of 1886 bought the H I Hewitt farm on Quaker Hill, where he resided ten years; after selling this, he lived a could of years on the place now owned by C Stone, then moved into the village and resumed work on the Gleaner.
Never very rugged, his health gradually failed and after putting in but two days a week for a year or more, he stopped work last July. For the larger part of his life, he was afflicted with asthma, which frequently caused him great distress and the loss of sleep; for the past year the suffering seemed to center in the stomach and at last became so constant and severe that he mind became affected and he decided to end it all. Arising Saturday morning, he descended to the kitchen and soon after his wife heard a heavy fall and hurrying down, found him on the floor, bleeding profusely. Assistance was promptly called for but despite all efforts he soon passed away.
Mr Howes had a highly nervous temperament, frequently causing him to give undue importance to little happenings, those more optimistic would hardly notice. He was a good and faithful workman, always "on time" and giving his best service to every task. He is survived by his wife and two sons, Harry, for several years past stenographer for a paper manufacturing form at Carthage and Pyrites, NY, and LeRoy, who resides at McGraw; also by two brothers, Charles H of Cortland, Hon Henry Howes of Cuyler. The funeral, sonducted at the house Tuesday afternoon, by Revs L A Wing and A Briddon, was largely attended by relatives and friends, who are as one in sympathy for the stricken family.
