Notes |
- During the war, Derrick lived with his father in Chingford, Essex. His mother and sisters were evacuated.....?
He was a telephone engineer and worked for the Post Office at Mount Pleasant. He was really good at fixing all kinds of electrical equipment. During his National Service he was a Sergeant in the RAF at Yatesbury in Wiltshire and worked on radar, ulitmately as an instructor. When he started he was installing radar equipment using ladders outside. Regular uniform shoes with leather soles were actually dangerous for climbing ladders outside. So his father made him a pair of shoes that looked like regular shoes but had softer non-slip soles. The Sergeant-Major caught him wearing them and put him on a charge. When the officer conducted a hearing he asked my father to explain. He did, and the officer said, "Sensible idea. Case dismissed"
My father's sister said that my father was so good at electrical stuff that he should have stayed in that area and stayed out of the shoe business. He wasn't incredibly happy at his work, especially when the company was bought by Start-Rite. I remember that I once asked him why he didn't find another job, and he seemed stuck with what he knew.
Derrick invented a machine for glueing the soles of shoes to the uppers. It looked like a modern Dutch pancake machine where everything goes around in a circle where it can be heated for a defined period of time.
My father actually was quite good at organization. He was involved in several outside bodies including the Independent Order of Foresters, when through a succession of fetes he raised enough money to build a swimming pool for handicapped children. He also was the Commodore of Snowflakes Sailing Club and ran the Three Rivers Race for Horning Sailing Club for many years. Often, I remember his efforts for other organizations eventually ended in rows.
My father remembered an "uncle" coming back from America in the late 1940s. My mother thinks it was one of his grandfather's brothers. Most likely it was Arthur George......
Some of Dad's other accomplishments:
Chief Ranger, Independent Order of Foresters, Waveney Lodge of Norfolk & Suffolk
Commodore, Snowflake Sailing Club
Organizer, Three Rivers Race for Horning Sailing Club for about 20 years
Race Officer, Thurne Mouth Open Regatta
