George Ernest Victor Howes was born at Cawnpore, India on 22 September 1877 and baptised there on 17 October 1877, the son of army sergeant John Howes and Sophia Browning.

In the 1891 census he was aged 13, a scholar, living with his parents at Pages Yard in Church Street, Weedon Bec, Northamptonshire where his father worked in the army ordnance store. In his late teens he followed in his father’s footsteps and enlisted with the Army Ordnance Corps (AOC) with the regimental number of 3471 and the rank of Private, and began an interesting and distinguished career with the AOC.

His first overseas posting was to South Africa during the Boer War of 1899-1902, where he rose through the ranks to Sergeant, and was awarded the Queens South Africa medal with the clasp “Relief of Ladysmith”, and the Kings South Africa medal with clasps for “South Africa 1901” and “South Africa 1902”.

On his return to England in 1903 he married Elizabeth Amelia Roberts at St John’s in Woolwich, and in the 1911 census he and Elizabeth were living in Aldershot where George was a Staff Quartermaster with the Royal Ordnance Corps (RAOC). No children were listed.

During the first world war he served in France and was awarded the 1914 Star, annotated “S-3471 Sub Cndr G Howes AOC”, and the Victory & British War medals annotated “Lieut G E V Howes”, having been commissioned on 3 Jan 1915.

In 1921 he was posted as Officer Commanding RAOC to Mauritius where he spent two years before he and Elizabeth Amelia returned to England in 1923, taking up residence at 34a Earlesfield Road, Wandsworth.

In June 1928 the London Gazette reported the award of the MBE to "Ordnance Executive Officer 2nd Class and Captain George Ernest Victor Howes, Royal Army Ordnance Corps", and in August 1930 he was promoted to Major.

On 6 September 1932 he retired from the army, the London Gazette reporting the retirement of "Major (OEO 1st class) G E V Howes MBE, having attained the age limit for retirement".

George and Elizabeth lived at 34a Earlesfield Road, Wandsworth until Elizabeth died in 1943. George Ernest Victor Howes died on 13 August 1946.
