      December 5, 1926

      My dear Tom

Accept my heartiest wishes for a very happy Christmas and prosperous New Year.

Five years ago I had the pleasure of spending a pleasant evening in your good company together with your sisters, Elsie and Lottie. I well remember the warmth of friendship that existed as we played a simple game of cards and entered into wholesome conversation as we enjoyed the repast from your festive board, and how your son added to our merriment with his sleight of hand tricks.

How heavily the rain fell when time came for my departure and how you rose to the occasion and kindly made arrangements for me to sleep in your bed, and I recall my words to you on awakening the following morning to the effect that it was beautiful to hear the birds whistle outside the bedroom window. That was actually five years ago Tom, and to look back it seems but a day, or, rather like arising after a beautiful dream. There are moments in my life that will never die and the above related occasion is one.

Home life is not known here, the idea of simply living for the purpose of money-making has been drilled into the children for so many generations that nothing but a nation of materialism remains. Rarely does one ever meet a man with beautiful soulful or sympathetic expressions and the majority of women here bear hard faces. The greed for gold is no doubt the chief cause of political corruption in this country; and it is almost unbelievable in a so called civilized country to read of the number of murders that occur every day. There are more murders in Chicago in a
month than in the whole of the British Empire in one year.

As you know I first went to Canada on crossing the Atlantic, and first worked in Winnipeg, Ottawa, Montreal and Toronto, but the Canadians do not welcome tradesmen from the old country, they contend there are too many Canadian tradesmen to fill the vacancies. The people welcome in Canada are farm workers. In the U.S., at least wherever I have been, anyone seems welcome but an Englishman. Of course the real good honest Americans, which are few and scarce, welcome an Englishman more than anyone else.

I hope one day to return and enjoy once again the home life at home, and see old friends and faces, for after all there is no life so sweet as the home life of old England.

The press talks of the big wages made here, but they seldom speak of the high cost of living. It costs a single man £5 per week to live here, and a married man has difficulty in making two ends meet on £13 per week, and when it is considered there are only about four trades in the country
receiving high wages and the majority having to manage on from £7 to £8 per week, and quite a bit of unemployment, the country is not what it is boasted to be.

In conclusion, I hope you and your family are in the best of health and that you are having success with your farm.

Kindly remember me to Mrs. Bryer and accept my sincere wishes for the season.

      I remain, yours sincerely,

      A. E. Howes
