Before Jan 22 1896, Sidney lived at 5 Warwick place in Paddington. On that date he enlisted in the army. Initially in the Duke of Cambridge’s Own (Middlesex Regt) then on 10 Mar 1896 as aprivate in the Royal Sussex regt.
Sidney enlisted in the army, specifically The Royal Garrison Artillery at Kingston-on Thames on the 23 Jun 1897.
Sidney served in the Boer war and was in South Africa at the time of the 1901 census. He served in the Royal Artillery. He was described as 5 ft 7 1/2 in tall with hazel eyes. He was described at the time as a plumber’s laborer. He was decorated for his service in South Africa receiving the Queens South African Medal with clasps for action in Cape Colony, Transvaal, Tugela Heights, Relief of Ladysmith and Lamps Nek. He was also awarded the King’s medal with clasps in 1901 and 1902. He was transferred to the Army Reserve on 23 June 1905 after serving 8 years of which 6years and 6 months were served abroad mainly in South Africa. He was discharged from the army in June 1909 but signed up for WW I where he served in the artillery. He married May Louise Naylor on June 1st 1914 at the Parish Church in Chapel Allerton, Leeds. Witnesses at the marriage were Sidney's brother George and May's sister Lucy Arrabella Naylor. At the time Sidney was described as a civil servant. His address was 1 Pember Rd in Kensal Green. He reenlisted in the RGA in WWI and was decorated three times. As a civilian he served as a Clerk of the Court at the Law courts in London. During and after WWII he and May were living at 98 Manor Avenue, Brockley, London. After retirement he worked part time as a clerk for Hugh Wylie, a men’s clothing store in Lewisham. In 1959, they moved to Sidcup in Kent and following the death of May in Dec 1962 he lived in a retirement home in Lewisham where he died in Oct 1965. In his later years he suffered from pernicious anemia and his death was due to heart failure. He was cremated in Sidcup.
