      See also entry for Howes Bros shoemakers in Kelly's Directory for 1896. Boot & Shoe Mfrs, 62 St George's Middle Street. VERY close to Cherry Tree Yard where his father lived. Maybe his father was the original co-owner of Howes Bros.....

      Notices regarding the closure of Howes Bros appeared in the London Gazette on November 23, 1934,
      December 11, 1934; June 7, 1935; September20, 1935, and November 11, 1935 and are available online at www.gazettes-online.co.uk.
      From Norwich Shoe Museum: Their address was St. Miles Shoe Works in Oak Street. Like many Norwich manufacturers, they produced high quality ladies' fashion shoes of light construction. In 1927, they were also making a range of children's shoes. Most Norwich shoe manufacturers ceased making children's shoes by the late 1930s.
      Evidently unlike most manufacturers there is no example of their work handed in to the shoe museum & none of their records seem to have been handed in when they ceased trading, this is not uncommon. Churches are required by law to hand theirs in but a great many vicars take them with them when they leave. Doesnt help research but understandable I guess.

      Had two wives: second was his housekeeper. According to my mother, there was a lot of fuss when he died,because she wasn't family, but the death notice in the paper (see below) shows her as having predeceased him.

      Also note that wife Ellen's address on the marriage cert was listed as Ebenezer Terrace, which is the address on young Richard James' birth certificate. So the father moved in with her

      Richard James the elder went on to purchase Ward Shoe Company in 1933, just off Magdalen Street in Norwich and then his son and family returned from London.

      Owed Pds2,500 back taxes in 1950s. "A very stubborn man," according to Jill. Refused to allow accountant to go over his books.

      FORMER CITY SHOE FIRM DIRECTOR DIES
      A well-known Norwich shoe manufacturer, Mr Richard James Howes, for many years a director of the Ward Shoe Company, who retired in 1957, died in West Norwich Hospital yesterday, aged 81.
      He was the third generation of a Norwich family of shoemakers. His only son is now managing director of the Ward........ the trade for over 60 years.
      Mr Howes was working for Messrs Sexton in Fishergate at the time of their disastrous fire in 1913 and was one of a number of Norwich factory managers and foremen who embarked on shoe manufacture on their own account immediately after the first world war.
      Also Death Notices from same day's paper show him as a "very dear friend" of Mrs Gertrude White, and that he was the husband of "the late Kate"
