Notes |
- 1891 Alfred appears to be on the census twice - both at his mother's house in Montpelier Rd and also at his step-sister's.
- We could not idenify Alfred Horace initially as the father of Wilfred. This next paragraph was our initial conjecture:
Was Alfred a "polite fiction"? It SEEMS so, but why make up such a thing as Professional Pianist, where Labourer would have done just as well? I THINK the reason is that a professional pianist will be away from home more often - an excuse for the mother only attending a baptism? And why make up the Howes name?
===============================
Well, Ada didn't make up the Howes name. Thanks to correspondent, Tim Howes of Australia, for figuring out that Ada was the sister of Maria Sweet, who was already in our database, married to an Alfred Howes with an unusual middle name. Both families were horribly dysfunctional and it seems near certain to us that Alfred had a relationship with Maria's younger sister also.
===================================
In addition to the Wilfred there are two other potentially related baptisms:
16 Feb 1902 in New Southgate, Ellen Daisy Sweet to parents Albert Horace Sweet (a soldier) and Ada Alice
16 Nov 1902 in Haringey, Alice Maude Sweet to Frank Arthur Sweet (a pianist) and Ada Alice
No birth records yet found for either child
- Can anyone solve the systery of this man? We posed the question in our newsletter of May 2020:
I've said before that sometimes even when we buy a certificate, we still can't figure out who the person was and how to tie him or her in to a wider family group. This one is a classic of the kind. Take a look at the birth certificate of Wilfred Leonard Howes.
It shows a father, deceased by the child's birth and a mother claiming to be married. We can't find a single Alfred Horace Howes anywhere. It's possible he existed, perhaps from a British colony?, but we can't see it. We can't find a marriage of the mother Ada Sweet to anyone named Howes. However, a year after Wilfred's birth she married a John Tubb under the name of Ada Hayers. We can't find a marriage of an Ada Sweet to anyone named Hayers either!
So, can anyone shed any kind of light onto any aspect of this, please? In particular we'd like to know the Howes connection. Any unravelling of any part of the mystery may help us get there. Thinking caps on, team!
