Thomas stopped the horse and saved the lady. Her husband, a Mr Johnson was so grateful to Howes for saving his wife’s life that he offered Howes a job as a manager of his estate (Roaches) in Montserrat. So Thomas Masters Howes and William Henry Wilkin [and a friend called Francis] came to Montserrat in 1835, the year after slavery had been abolished in the island. So, Thomas was IN Yorkshire but not necesarily OF it. Note that the British Library has a record of the transfer of title of the Amersham estate from William Ottley to Thomas Masters Howes on 15 Aug 1857, though the document shown online is merely the affidavit made in London. .
