      Notes from Patrick Cunningham: 1901 census at Porchester Terrace; they had 9 domestic servants!

      1891 census Charles Thorpe, Land Agent & Auctioneer, was visiting - Probably Eliza's brother

      1861 census; visitor to John Warth b cambridgeshire at High Street, Sutton, Cambs. Also there John, Margaret, Eliza A and William Warth, plus governess Mary A Sadler from London. John Warth listed as Farmer of 444 acres employing 17labourers and 5 boys. His wife was marked as absent.Eliza is the right age to become his wife.
      1841 census finds him staying with Phlip and Catherine at West Street - age 6
      elected a Governor of the Law and Hutcheson FoundationThe fields he had purchased in the sale of his uncle Henry's estate in 1870 he steadily added to by purchase of land and cottages as opportunity afforded. For example, he purchased the Windmill Inn, then the corn windmill which stood nextto his residence in West Street, and then the " two maltings and brewery with dovecote, cooper's shop, stable and outbuildings " which adjoined the windmill. In all it was a sizeable estate in Cliffe which he left when he died, suddenly, on 6th January 1904; this in addition to his estate and interests in London. - Canon John Bryan; King's Cliffe Personalities of the Past: The Howes FamilyFrom his wife's Obutuary, Stamford & Rutland News of 19th November 1929:He was a director of Messrs, Cook, Son, and Company, St, Paul's Churchyard, London. Through Mrs, Howes' influence, many King's Cliffe lads were found situations upon leaving school in what was known in the old days as "the firm".Inscription in King's Cliffe Church:"1. South Window: The CrucifixionThis window bears the following text:'In the reverenence of God this window is dedicated to the loving memory of John Groome Howes who died VIth Jan MCMIV. Requiescat in peace.'"Notice in The London Gazette, 21/03/1862:"NOTICE is hereby given, that the following is a copy of an entry made in the book kept by the Chief Registrar of the Court of Bankruptcy for the registration of Trust Deeds for the benefit of Creditors, Composition and Inspectorship Deeds executed by a Debtor, as required by the Bankruptcy Act, 1861, sees. 187, 192, 194, 196, and 199:”Number” 997 Title of Deed, whether Deed of Assignment, Composition, or Inspectorship ” Assignment.Date of Deed ” 24th February, 1862.Date of execution by Debtor ” 24th February, 1862.Name and description of the Debtor, as in the Deed ” Evan Scurlock, of Llanelly, in the county of Carmarthen.       A marriage notice appeared in the Peterborough Advertiser of 29th Jan, 1870, which ran " KING'S CLIFFE, MARRIED, On the 26th inst, at Fotheringhay, Northamptonshire, (by the Revd Alfred Augustus Longhurst, vicar, assisted by the Revd EdwardDu Pre, rector of King's Cliffe,) John Groome, eldest son of Groome Howes, Esq., of Hamilton-terrace, St, John' s Wood, to Eliza Helen, second daughter of Charles Thorpe, Esq, of Fotheringhay, Northamptonshire ". And in the same edition ofthe paper there appeared this report; " KING'S CLIFFE: Wednesday being the wedding day of J, G, Howes, Esq of 22 St. Paul' s, London, and of this place, he kindly ordered a dinner to be provided for fourteen persons, including his labourersand others, at Messrs Bentham and Green's, Cross Keys Inn. Roast beef, plum pudding, punch, &c., were partaken of by the party, who did justice to the good things set before them, the host doing all in his power to carry out the wish oftheir liberal master. At Christmas the same gentleman gave to his labourers and to all those engaged in harvest work, and others, 156lbs,of beef.

      12. John Groome Howes died in England 6 Janury 1904, there were three codicils to his will.
      13. Only assets in Australia appear to have been real estate at North Sydney valued at £3750 and accumulated rents of £162.10.0. The probate packet gave no precise indication of where the property was located, nor of what it comprised, other than that itwas freehold.

      There were a heap of other people mentioned in the will who received various bequests of goods. I only scanned through them but I would suggest some, or a good many, could have been loyal employees.
