    Notes
    • From the 1918 London Gazette sourced above, Citation for his DSO reads:
For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. This officer, originally in charge of a company, had to take command of the battalion on the second day of the fighting, owing to casualties among the senior ranks. He commanded it for a week of heavy fighting with marked success. His energy and dis-regard of danger thoughout were an inspiration to his men, especially when he hung on to the front line with a small party of the regiment until completely surrounded, only getting out by his pluck and judgement after dark.

Latin inscription on the wall of Wellington College Chapel reads:
      IN PIAM MEMORIAM
      HARRY WILFRED HOUSE
      DOMUS NOSTRAE PER QUINDECIM ANNOS
      MAGISTRI
      MCMXLI - MCMLVI
      MAGISTER NAVEM NOSTRAM E TEMPESTATE
      IN TRANQUILLUM GUBERNAVIT
My loose translation reads: In pious remembrance of Harry Wilfred House, headmaster for 15 years, 1941-1956, he piloted our ship from war to peace

The folowing note was provided to us by David Gore of the Mayne One-Name Study:
HARRY WILFRED HOUSE 1895-1987: a soldier in WW1, awarded a DSO and an MC (short of a VC, these are the next highest awards for leadership and gallantry under fire); Oxford “Fellow” and Lecturer; Schoolmaster. His portrait is in the National Portrait Gallery, London. His gravestone is at St Peter’s, Stutton, Suffolk..

Harry became Headmaster of Wellington College, Berkshire (founded after the 1st Duke of Wellington for soldier’s sons – ‘Heroum Filii '). Harry had suddenly to replace his predecessor Bobby Longden during WW2 when the latter was killed in 1940 by a German bomb which destroyed the Master’s Lodge and Bobby; he was the only casualty in the school grounds during the war. Although the school is near London we did not move, as did some, to avoid the bombing, and I remember many nights spent in underground shelters. http://www.getreading.co.uk/news/local-news/wellington-college-tribute-fallen-4194210

See also: https://livesofthefirstworldwar.org/lifestory/1975147 and note the following quote from David Gore of the Mayne One-Name Study who prepared it: "In the process I became aware of the quite extraordinary war record of this young academic who at the age of 22/23 found himself commanding the remnants of an infantry Battalion of some 700 men in “heavy fighting over the period of a week with marked success”. Apart from this, which contributed to the award of his Distinguished Service Order (DSO) in 1918, he had been frequently marked out in the War Diaries for his initiative, judgement, conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in the course of his long service on the Western Front. That was from his arrival in France as a Subaltern in July 1915 and finally as a Major in March 1919 after the Armistice. His more than three years of service in hazard at the front was broken only when he was wounded in July 1916 and returned the following November. Apart from his DSO, he also received the Military Cross (MC) and a foreign award, the Italian Silver Medal for Military Valour." [9]
