    Notes
    • We are endebted to John McDonagh for the following note:
William Alfred (Alf) lived in Masterton for most of working life as a Carpenter and Joiner with Riggs builder company except for time spent in Hasting assisting with its rebuilding following the devastating Hawkes Bay earthquake of 3 February 1931.

At the outbreak of the second world war he enlisted with the Royal New Zealand Airforce as Flying Officer serial No NZ412333. Due to his short stature 5’3” he was assigned the role as wireless operator - nose gunner on RAF Wellington Bombers seeing service in England, over Germany, Africa and in the middle east. Despite being shot down on more than one occasion the aircraft always managed to reach home territory before crash landing.
Note: His NZRAF ID card gives his date of birth as 3/9/1908 ??

At the end of the war William Alfred (Alf) returned home where he continued to work as a carpenter and joiner with CE Daniel ltd. It was on the demolition of CE Daniel’s retail outlet that he was tragically killed in 1963 when he slipped and fell from the first floor landing when he slipped and a part of a counter they were removing that he grabbed for broke causing him to fall backwards to the ground. He suffered head injuries and died at the scene. William Alfred (Alf) never married instead he lived with and cared for his mother till his untimely death.
