- Election Address
To the Burgesses of the East Ward of the Borough of Folkestone
Ladies and Gentlemen
In compliance with the request of a considerable number of the Bugesses of the East Ward, I venture to solicit your vote and interest at the forthcoming election for the Town Council.
Having been resident in the town for a considerable period, I have noticed the increase and advance with much interest, and have been able to form some opinion of its requirements, and, should you honour me with your approval, I am prepapred to place the experience gained in a long and aactive business life at the service of my fellow ratepayers.
There are many subjects of importance in the future welfare of our town, which must shortly count on for discussioin, and I should be prepared to enter them unboased by and party consideration, and solely with a view to the general benefit.
I have the honour to remain,
Ladies and Gentlemen
Your obedient servant
GEORGE WILLIAM HOWSE
West Cliff Hotel, Oct 23rd, 1873
===========================
The very same page of the newspaper also contains an advertisement for George Howse, Wine and Spirit Merchant and Refreshment contractor
AND the following notice
I HEREBY solemnly declare that a report that Mr GEORGE WILLIAM HOWSE of the West Cliff Hotel, Folkestone is or has ever been in any way connected with me or my family, is utterly false and malicious. I never had any transaction whatever with him in my life, and until a few days back, he was an utter stranger to me.
Signed
MARY ANN HOWES, 65 Dover Street
Witness: Elizabeth Payne

Notes |
- George a widower upon marriage to Ellen
Groom definitely signed the register for his second marriage as Howse (despite the father's surname)
Perhaps interesting to note that in several advertisements for establishments he ran, George stressed the availability of billiard tables. Maybe there is nothing to it but there was a well-known billiard player in the 19th century called George Howse
ALso maybe relevant is that similar adverts to the others were placed by a George Howse for the Yacht Tavern in Greenwich in 1865
Curious that a George Howes from Brighton is in Greenwich in 1861, but that man is 71 and has a 14 year old son, John, with him
- baptized in Marylebone 1817?
