      Biographical note from Bill Howes
      William Robert Howes (1856-1945)

William Robert Howes was born on February 5, 1856 in Slough, Stoke Poges, England. He was the
first son of William Howse (spelling intentional), cabinet-maker, and Jane Seward, who were married
in Upton, England in 1855. He was baptized on April 12, 1857.
Recalling her father’s story, Elsie Spence (nee Howes) told of a time when her father (WR Howes) was
aged 15 and his father locked him in his room naked as a form of punishment. WR escaped out the
window in the altogether and was helped by his friends who nicknamed him “Creeping Jesus” as a
result of the incident. This may explain why he enlisted as a private in the 100 th Foot within a year – on
October 14, 1872 – at the age of sixteen. His surname (originally spelled HOWSE) was changed by the
      army when he enlisted.
      He won promotion as follows:
      December 31, 1874 – to Corporal.
      November 20, 1876 – to Lance Sergeant.
      June 29, 1877 – to Sergeant.
      December 4, 1880 – to Colour Sergeant.
He embarked for India with the 100 th Foot 0n October 5, 1877 and arrived at Bombay. Known as “the
handsome Sergeant”, at the age of 24 he married Lucy Marion Aldridge, daughter of the Divisional
Inspector of the Indian Police Force, in Amritsar, India on December 6, 1880. The marriage lasted 65
      years and produced eleven children.
He was an expert marksman, winning trophies in army competitions. On one occasion he was asked by
a Major to demonstrate his skills with a rifle and he succeeded in scoring nine consecutive bulls-eyes
at a range of 800 yards.
Promotion came again to the rank of Quarter-Master Sergeant on February 2, 1891, and on May 26 th of
the same year he was promoted Regimental Sergeant-Major with Warrant rank. This is the highest rank
obtainable by an enlisted man and carried much authority and respect from the ranks. In July, 1891 the
regiment became the 1 st Battalion of the Prince of Wales Leinster Regiment – Royal Canadians. The
Regiment left Bombay for Ireland on December 22, 1894.
On March 4, 1896 he received his Commission to serve as Honourary Lieutenant and Quarter-Master
of the 5 th Battalion of the Leinster Regiment.
He was promoted to Honourary Captain on March 10, 1907, and he retired in 1909. However, he was
recalled on August 5, 1914 as a Captain at the outbreak of the First World War and was promoted to
      Major during the war.
During his long military career, he was awarded the Military Medal, the Long Service Medal, and the
      Good Conduct Medal.
He retired from the regiment in November, 1918 with the rank of Major. He died on June 4, 1945 in
Skerries, Ireland and his wife died on March 16, 1946, also in Skerries.
