Thanks to correspondent Brian Howes for this:
"The Great Yarmouth Roll of Honour entry reads: Private 18047, 2nd Battalion, Norfolk Regiment. Killed in action in Macedonia 9 December 1915. Aged 36. On attachment to unit unknown as 2nd Norfolk Regiment did not serve in Greece. Son of Thomas and Hannah Howes of Great Yarmouth. Husband of May Eunice Howes of 19, Row,31, North Quay, Great Yarmouth. Born and enlisted in Great Yarmouth. No known grave. Commemorated on Doiran Memorial, Macedonia."
And thanks too, to the Norfolk FHS facebook page contributor, John Taylor, for the following complete explanation:
"For over twenty years I have been researching the names of the men listed on the Great Yarmouth War Memorial. Henry Howes is one of these men. Although your findings are much the same as mine, I can add that Henry was awarded the 1914-15 Star, the British War Medal, and the Victory Medal. At the time of his death he was attached to the 6th Btn Royal Dublin Fusiliers. The 2nd Btn Norfolk Regiment went to Mesopotamia in November 1914. The 6th Btn Royal Dublin Fusiliers moved from Gallipoli to Salonika during October 1915. It was possibly during this time that Henry was transferred.
"I would suggest that Henry Howes was a volunteer. Conscription was not introduced until after his death with the Military Service Act of January 1916, conscription starting on 2nd March 1916.
"The photo of Henry appears to show him wearing the much disliked blue uniform. At the start of the war Britain had a small volunteer Army. When Lord Kitchener called for more volunteers many heeded the call and at one time over 30,000 men a day were volunteering. This meant the Army was running out of uniforms, and the War Office decided upon a uniform known as the ‘Kitchener Blues’. As Neil Storey writes in his book ‘Norfolk in the Great War’ page 96 “The jackets and trousers were sourced from uniform stocks held for postmen, prison warders and prisoners.
