Killed in Action 17th Noember 1942 Tunisia Age 22

Horace Harold William Howes was born in Norwich in 1920, his father being Edward George Howes and his mother, Mable E. "Bill" as he was known to his family and friend was a keen sportsman winning many prizes as a member of the St Ives Swimming Club and as a footballer he regularly played for Needlingworth FC. Bill was living at 52 Little Farthing Close, St Ives and at the outbreak of war he enlisted into the 5th Battalion Northamptonshire Regiment with the service number 5886288. It wasn't long before Bill found himself overseas with the BEF taking part in the Battle of France and the Retreat from Dunkirk. Bill's battalion first made contact with leading elements of the German advance on 20th May 1940 at Oudenarde. For the next month Bill was involved in a rearguard action fighting the way back to the beaches at Dunkirk finally being evacuated in the 1st June 1940. After landing back in the UK at Dover, Bill was granted two days leave before returning to his unit. Hard training followed as the battalion prepared to once again go overseas, this time to North Africa as part of Operation Torch. The 5th Northants boarded the troopship Viceroy of India on the 15th October 1942 and landed at Algiers on the 8th November 1942. Bill however did not proceed wtith the rest of his battalion but joined a small mobile force called "Hart Force", Hart Force was comprised of A Company of 5th Northamptons with its carrier platoon and a section of anti-tank guns. At 0500 hours on the 11th November Hart Force assembled at Maison Blanche airfield and moved east. The road surface was reasonable for traffic but the mountainous sections required great care to negotiate the many bends, cuttings and tunnels. The journey took the column past Boudie and Djedjelli, dodging enemy planes and dive bombers, until it reached Bone just after the commandos had landed. From there Hart Force pressed on to the border, reaching Tabarka later that evening. On 16h November 1942 the division made its first contact with the enemy. Hart Force had left all of its support vehicles at Tebarka and had gone forward as lorried infantry. It had passed through the junction at the tiny village of Djebel Aboid where the road split, one branch heading towards Mateur and Bizerta and one towards Beja, and was making progress along the road to Mateur. On the 17th November Kampfgruppe Witzing advanced amd made contact with Hart Force. A fierce firefight commenced and after heavy losses were inflicted on both sides, Hart Force withdrew. Bill was posted as "Missing in Action" on the 17th and news reached his parents in February 1943. It is not clear when but Bill was officially listed as Killed in Action during the fighting of the 17th november 1942. Bill was buried at Tabarka Ras Ragel War Cemetery in grave 4, D.17.
