      DEATH of MR C. D. HOWES, General Manager of Meggitt Ltd,

      The death occurred on Sunday, June 14th, of Mr Cyril Drummond Howes, Director & General Manager of Meggitt Limited at the age of 58 after a long illness.

      The late Mr Howes was associated with Meggitt Limited for over 28 years. his hard work and sound judgment helping considerably in the growth of the company to its present proportions.

      He was born in Sydney and prior to joining Meggitt Limied, in 1914 was associated, from the commencement of his oommorolal career, with Messrs. Franckel, Spencer & Co., Publlo Accountants and Auditors, of Sydney.

      During the Great War, the late Mr Howes served with the AIF from 1916 to the Armistice.

      He will be greatly missed by his many business friends throughout both Australia and New Zealand, who always held him in the highest personal esteem.

      He was a member of the New South Wales Club and the Killara Glolf Club where he served until his recent illness, on the committee.

      The funeral, which was private, took place on Tuesday, June 16th, at the Northern Suburbs Crematorium.

    • From the research of Bonny Howes used in the compilation of a book by the Hurstville Historical Society:

      Cyril was the son of William Howes and Henrietta Bedser and born 3 November 1883 at 141 George St Sydney. His father was a master tailor of some repute in Sydney. Prior to enlistment Cyril was an accountant, married to Madeline Mary Cleary in 1916 and living in Beresford Rd Rose Bay NSW.


      He enlisted 5 September 1916 and was attached to the 5th Field Artillery Brigade Reinforcements 11.


      From 5 September 1916 to 15 September he was a private before being classified as a gunner. On 3 April 1917 he was promoted to Lance Corporal and then a Sergeant 11 February 1918. He was Brought to the Notice of the Secretary of State for War for valuable services rendered.


      A further note in his files states he was gassed at Ypres in November 1917 and was returned to Australia per Khyber listed as being ‘on duty’ 31 March 1919.


      He died 31 July 1942 and is buried in Northern Suburbs Cemetery.
