    • THIS PERSON PREVIOUSLY ASSUMED TO HAVE BEEN THE SON OF DIVES BLAZEY, in line with article of Eastern Daily Press in 1975. Now known to have had different parents.

      Military papers show his height: 5'9"

      From Birmingham Post May 19, 2008 concerning a book about the Charge of the Light Brigade:
      Also included in the book is John Howes, a Birmingham boot repairer who in 1890 claimed £15 from the newly formed Light Brigade Relief Fund, living at his work and home address of 3 Jamaica Row, Digbeth.
      This was also the address that Henry Keegan gave to receive his payment of £30.
      Mr Howes, together with Mr Parkinson, helped form the Birmingham Military Veteran's Association in 1894. Their sole purpose was to aid local survivors of the Crimean and Indian Mutiny campaigns.

      Excerpt from "Honour The Light Brigade" by Canon William M. LUMMIS, M.C. ? He appears on page 30 as follows:-

      1274 HOWES [SERGEANT JOHN]

      Born: 1828 at Wymondham, near Norwich.
      Enlisted: 16th November 1846.
      Very slightly wounded in the Charge: 25th October 1854.
      Later became Troop Sergeant-Major. Discharged c. 1860.
      Died: 25th December 1902 and buried in Lodge Hill Cemetery, Birmingham.

      Medals: Crimea (Alma, Balaclava, Inkerman & Sebastopol clasps) + Turkish Medal. Howes assisted Cornet HUNT in an unsuccessful attempt to bring away a Russian gun. He was said to be the last man back to the lines after the Charge.

      Attended the First Balaclava Banquet, 25th October 1875.
      Member Balaclava Commemoration Society 1879.
      Signed Loyal Address 1887.
      Attended the Annual Dinners in 1892 and 1895.
