      Mauled by lioness: Carried on
      LONDON, August 21
Hobbling about with a bandaged leg, Sydney Howes, young lion tamer at the pier circus at Clacton, Essex, went on with his show last night, not long after a lioness had attacked him.
He was driving three lionesses back to their cages after they had been in the arena when one of them, Adais, turned on him and clawed his right leg.
Howes fell on one knee. An assistant ran up and drove the animal away.
Then Howes got up and helped to drive the other animals back. He did not leave the cage until they were all fastened up.
"It was a nasty moment because two other lionesses were behind me, " Howes said afterwards. "I dread to think what would have happened if they had turned nasty too. I managed to scramble away.
"It is a new act and these animals have only been performing three months."

    • From the Belfast Telegraph:
My final tribute: by lioin tamer's father
Gordon Howes the lion tamer, who was mauled to death by two lionesses, was buried yesterday in the churchyard at his home village of Polebrook, Northants.
Minutes after the funeral had ended, his 68-year old father, Sidney, dashed to Bristol to perform a lion tamer act in the ring.
In the best "show must go on" circus tradition, Mr Howes said: "This is my final tribute to my son. I taught him everything I knew and he would have wanted me to perform tonight."
His 38-year old son Gordon died after being savaged by lionesses in Dublin while rehearsing for the start of the Chipperfield Circus there last weekend.
Mr Howes, who claims to be the oldest lion tamer in the world, was advised not to perform last night but he insisted as a mark of respect.
"This is something I have to do. He was very dear to us all," he said.
Nearly 150 circus performers and owners attended the funeral and last nigh every circus in the world had a minute's silence in tribute.
Gordon was buried in a tiny churchyard where six other perormers have been laid to rest.
Circus proprietor Gerry Cottle said later: "He will be sadly missed. We are like a big family and suffer the trials and tribulations of everyone concerned in the business."
Before working for Chipperfields, Gordon was employed by Roberts Brothers' Circus, which has its winter quarters at Polebrook, near Oundle. He had lived there since the age of six.
The two lionesses which mauled him have gone to Chipperfields Circus at Oxford, but there are no plans to destroy them.
Mr Dickie Chipperfield said: "We would only do this if members of the family complained. But his wife Barbara said she does not want them destroyed."
