- This Walter was a complete enigma. He appears in 1911 from nowhere and disappears similarly.
William Howes and Eliza obviously split up before 1891. Eliza appeared to have found another partner who became effectively a stap-father, close enough to be named by her son William as his father on his marriage record.
We concluded that Walter was probably not named Howes, but took it as a matter of convenience.
That surmise was correct. Thanks to electoral registers, we found a Walter Howes at 39 Shirland Road from 1899 to 1903. The 1901 census tells another story, however: a Walter Pinner is living with with Eliza and step-daughter, Florence at the same address.
