    John was convicted with several others of stealing several hams from their employer, Mr Isaac Horton.
    During court case, John was referred to variously as John House or John Howes, age 33, married born Cheltenham
    Descriptions of the court case were printed in the Wolverhampton Chronicle and Birmingham Daily Post at the time. In the Daily Post of May 30, 1860, Howes was quoted as saying to Mary Ann Cullen, a barmaid at his local watering hole, the Turk's Head, "If you split on me, I will pitch into you, for people might think I have been robbing Mr Horton's premises."
