    Notes:

Thomas was recommended for admission to the Great Hospital by Sir Peter Eade.
"After Sir William's death the Norwich High School for Girls first opened its doors here on 22nd February 1875, under the supervision of head mistress Miss Ada Benson, whose brother later became Archbishop of Canterbury. Two years later the school moved to the Assembly House, after which the property was purchased by Sir Peter (then Doctor) Eade. An honorary consultant physician to the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital, he became an Alderman of the city and member of the Board of Guardians, being made Sheriff in 1880-81 and Mayor in 1883, 1893 and 1895. He received a knighthood in 1885 from Queen Victoria in recognition of his public services. A member of the committee of the Norfolk and Norwich Archaeological Society, he published several important works on local matters, the chief, perhaps, being his History of the Parish of St Giles, Norwich, which ran to two editions, and a History of the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital. He died in 1915 aged ninety, and his wife Ellen two months later."

    Funeral cost quoted as 11/6d:
    Coffin: 4/-
    Shroud: 3/-
    Church fees: 1/6
    Bell: 2/-
    Extra items: 1/-

His son, Thomas jr, had "his insurance policy" and arranged burial

TBH was eligible because he had no income producing property and had lived in Norwich the previous 3 years.

We know from the marriage cert of Charlotte that her father was John Smith. In 1851, a John Smith aged 15, cordwainer's apprentice was staying with the family - looks like a younger brother of Charlotte. (There's also a 10-year old "son" called William, whom I just cannot explain).
In 1861, there's a Robert Smith present in 1861, age 20, Cordwainer - explicitily noted as a brother-in-law. There are only two Robert Smiths aged 10 in the 1851 census who are sons of a John.

Looking at these two Roberts age 10 in 1851 (sons of John in Norwich), it looks like the first is more likely to have produced a John age 15 in 1851, and a Charlotte aged 22. The occupation fits too.

Clearly, the first is way more likely than the second. It's impossible for the second couple to have had Charlotte. I'm not completely convinced yet, but it's strong evidence. Note that Hardenham is almost certainly Hardingham, just North West of Wymondham.

Re Occupation: here's what I received from one helpful person:
According to the 'Dictionary Of Occupational Terms' (produced to aid statisticians extracting data from censuses), 'havel' is a dialect term for 'heald'.

A heald is an item associated with loom weaving and is described as "loops through which warp threads are drawn"

There are a number of occupations listed associated with the production and preparation of healds, all more or less self explanatory (tending to the less as far as I am concerned!):, viz:

(All the following preceded by Heald/Havel)
    Brusher
    Fitter
    Knitter
    Machinist
    Maker
    Mender
    Sizer (applies size)
    Varnisher

Associated with the weaving process, in particular with the use of Jute, but not preceded by Heald/Havel is the occupation Drawer, described as follows:

"Takes end of warp which goes last on to the weaver's beam, after beam has been removed from beaming frame, and which contains weaver's lease; selects individual threads and draws them through healds with a hooked tool, or attaches them to ends of warp threads in fabric already woven and in loom."

    (Clear as mud!)

I can find nothing that could be taken as 'Stai' - unless you consider 'Sizer'.

Perhaps if you found a treatise on 19th Century weaving (via GOOGLE ?) things might become clearer.

    Slaie

    noun
    A weaver's reed; a sley.
