- Sue Eaton relates: "The Lion is now the Red Lion and although no longer trading there is reference to it currently being “secured” by the Parish Council as a pub, and the application for it to be turned into a house has been refused. It’s Grade 2 listed and in the Listed Buildings references it states it was in use as a Beer House in 1792. In 1851 John Howse died and his assets were sold at auction and included “that old established public house which sold for 600 guineas”."
A John Howes died in Cirencester RD in March 1850, aged 75 - a relation?

I William Howse of Asbrook in the Parish of Ampney Crucis in the County of Gloucester Gentleman Do make this my last Will and Testament in manner following (that is to say) I give to my daughter Maria Watkeys the wife of Hugh Watkeys all that my piece or parcel of meadow or pasture land called Charlham in the parish of Ampney Saint Peter with the appurtenances to hold to her my said Daughter and her heirs for ever also I give to her my said Daughter one annuity or yearly rent charge of seven pounds per annum clear of Land Tax and all other Deductions for and during the term of her life to be issuing and payable out of my Messuage or Tenement called or known by the name or sign of the Lion. Situated in the said parish of Ampney Saint Peter and the Buildings Orchard Gardens and other Appurtenances thereunto belonging. The same to be paid on the twenty ninth day of September yearly the first payment thereof to be made on the twenty ninth day of September next after my decease And subject to the payment of the said Annuity or Rent Charge I give and devise the said Messuage heridito and premises unto and to the use of my son John Howse his heirs and Assigns for ever. Also I give and devise unto and to the use of him my said son John Howse his heirs Executors Administrators and Assigns according to my Estate and Interest therewith respectively all other my Messuages Cottages Lands Tenements and heridito whatsoever and wheresoever Also I give to him my said son all monies that shall be due to me on or at the time of my decease subject nevertheless to the payment to my said Daughter of the third part of such monies or of so much thereof as shall be recovered or received on the said Bonds after deducting the Costs Charges and Expenses of recovering and recording the same And I give and bequeath unto my said Daughter all my other Securities and all my Ready Monies and all my Household Goods and Furniture Plate Linen China Cattle Corn Hay and all my other Chattels and Effects which shall be in or upon the Dwelling House Land and premises called Hill Oak now in my own occupation at the time of my decease And I give and bequeath to my said Son all other my Goods Chattels and Effects not herein before disposed of and I nominate and appoint him my sole Executor of this my Will And I revoke all former Wills and Testaments by me made and do declare this to be my last In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and Seal the twenty ninth day of February one thousand eight hundred and four. This Will was proved in London the twenty sixth day of June in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and five before the Worshipful Samuel Pearce Parson Doctor of Laws Surrogate of the Right Honourable Sir William Wynne Knight also Doctor of Laws Master Keeper or Commissary of the Prerogative Court of Canterbury lawfully constituted by the Oaths of John Howse the son of the deceased and the Sole Executor named in the said Will to who Administration of all and Singular the Goods Chattels and Credits of the said deceased was granted having been first sworn duly to Administer.
