The Family of Mr. Geoffrey Peter Howes, known by many as Geoff wish to formally announce the passing of one of Northampton’s finest politicos of his era and loving father to two children Deborah Lilley and Adam Howes loving grandfather to Hayden and father in law to James
Geoff, former Labour Borough Councilor of Northampton for over 3 decades and former Mayor between 1990-1991, sadly passed away in the early hours of Tuesday 9th December 2014 whilst at home in St James. Geoff had been suffering for many years with diabetes.
Geoff had been a member of the Labour and Co-op Party for most of his life and was a very much well respected member of the political life of Northampton and was respected across most of the political parties in Northampton. Geoff was made Freeman of the Borough in November 2001 for his achievements and life’s dedication to Northampton and for his hard work in finance of the Borough of Northampton which through his years as chair of finances managed to keep Northampton’s finances on track and in the surplus.
Geoff was also a keen speaker and advocate on the use of the Market Square and was one of the main people behind the St Crispin’s Street fair at its inception.
Both Deborah and Adam state that “Dad can only be described as a proud and loving man. Proud of his town, its sporting venues such as The Saints, the Cobblers and the Steelbacks and was most of all proud to be a Northamptonian. Dad was very much a voice for the people of the Borough which saw him being reelected for over 3 decades to represent local people at the heart of political power and decision making at Northampton Town Hall, the Guildhall and was a much loved and well respected Borough Councilor. He will be sadly missed.
Geoff also worked at British Timken for many years which was based in the Duston Area of Northampton as an engineer and trainier as well as an active member of the trade union movement and the steward of the Northampton Labour Club until his retirement in 2012.
Both Adam and Deborah report that their father was a caring and considerate person, compassionate and dedicated about his public life but also was as equally compassionate and dedicated as a loving father and Grandfather and will be a great loss to them and his wider family that being the people of the Borough of Northampton. Geoff can only be described reports Adam and Deborah as great man who is gone but never forgotten.As a family his passing will leave a great void in our lives and we will miss him dearly. He was truly a great man, an amazing father, amazing grandfather to Hayden and inspiration to us all. His Name is enlisted in the honor rolls of Northampton for time and memorial and is a fitting tribute to such a great man, a great Northamptonian and a strong advocate and voice for the Borough of Northampton and its people
